Helping you land the job

First - Pick the appropriate style of resume

Functional Resume - This style highlights your skills and expertise without show how or when you acquired the experience. This version is good for anyone who is new to the industry, has little experience or has a time gap in their work history.

Chronological Resume - This style summarizes your experience by time, starting with your most recent held position. This version is good to show progression if you are aiming to advance to a more experienced level or management position.

Second - Make sure you cover all your bases

Objective can include items such as:

  • Your profession/trade specialty.
  • Licenses, permits and certifications.
  • Years of experience in the field.
  • Important skills and industry keywords.
  • Equipment or machinery you can operate.
  • A brief mention of top career accomplishments.

Work history is pretty straight forward, but also think about:

  • Did you train new employees?
  • Did your work enable the team to complete a project on time or on budget?
  • Did you earn a perfect safety rating?
  • Did you complete any special training?
  • Did you build a reputation for reliability?
  • Did you complete all jobs with zero defects or errors?
  • Did you recommend or implement processes that improved efficiency, productivity or workflow?
  • Did you submit all reports on time?

Education is more than just school:

  • Did you take a course?
  • Did you complete a certificate?
  • Did you attend continuing education seminars?

Third - Get it proofread!

Lastly - but possibly most important, have someone else proofread your resume. You only have one chance to make a first impression.
